Where is Unrooted based?

We are based in London, UK

What is baobab and why do you use it in your drinks?

Baobab is a superfruit that grows on trees in 32 countries across Africa. The fruit has a hard shell and naturally dries on the branch, so the bit that we eat on the inside is actually a dry powder. We use baobab in our drinks because it is incredibly healthy. Baobab is high in fibre, vitamin C, antioxidants and a long list of other nutrients. This means that baobab has a wide range of functional benefits, including energy, gut health, increased metabolism and overall wellness.

Where does your baobab come from?

We source our baobab fruit from Zimbabwe.

Tell me about the CBD in your products?

We use 20mg of CBD in one of our shots, called “Cool & Calm.” CBD is one of many chemical compounds called cannabinoids found in the hemp or cannabis plant. CBD is not psychoactive, which means it does not get you “high”.

CBD is not suitable for children or pregnant or breastfeeding women. Please do not take more than 70mg of CBD per day.

What does Unrooted do to support environmental sustainability?

Unrooted has partnered with The Baobab Foundation in South Africa. They have an initiative called Baobab Guardians, which plants baobab seedlings (baby baobab trees!) in areas where existing baobab trees are vulnerable to climate change and environmental degradation. Each tree planted is looked after by someone during its initial growth spurt, usually one of the rural women who harvest baobab fruit in the area, until the tree reaches 3m in height. This process can take 3-4 years, after which the tree is strong enough to survive on its own. Unrooted makes an annual donation to the Baobab Guardians program.

What does Unrooted do to support the communities in which it operates?

Unrooted sources its baobab fruit from Zimbabwe, where our supplier, B’Ayoba, has a network of over 4000 men and women who harvest baobab fruit each year. In Zimbabwe, public school costs $45 per year per child, and only primary school is mandatory by law. This means many children, especially young girls, end up not attending secondary school because their families cannot afford the fees. Some of the most needy families are those with parents who work to harvest baobab fruit – a seasonal job that at times accounts for the majority of their annual income. We work with B’Ayoba to identify the families most in need and help them to pay their children’s school fees.

Does Unrooted work with the African Baobab Alliance?

Yes. Unrooted is a member of the African Baobab Alliance. Nathan, our founder, is also on the board of the ABA.

Does Unrooted work with any African suppliers?

Unrooted sources its baobab fruit from Zimbabwe via a local African Baobab Alliance approved supplier, B’Ayoba.

Does harvesting the baobab fruit for your drinks damage the trees or local environment?

Harvesting baobab fruit does not damage or stunt the growth of the baobab trees in any way. In fact, in many cases baobab trees benefit from the extra care and attention given to them by those who harvest the fruit, as the trees (via the sale of fruit) are a crucial source of income.

Does harvesting the baobab fruit for your drinks mean there is less fruit for local consumption? Does Unrooted’s presence increase prices or make local produce unaffordable?

Baobab trees and their fruit are plentiful all across Africa, it is estimated that there are over 5 million baobab trees in Zimbabwe alone. The African Baobab Alliance also estimates that 80% of baobab fruit is never even harvested.
