CARBON NEUTRAL & ONE STEP CLOSER TO A SENSATIONAL PLANET
YOU READ THAT RIGHT. WE’RE OFFICIALLY CARBON NEUTRAL!
Our mission at Unrooted is to create sensational products for a truly sensational planet and becoming Carbon Neutral takes us ever closer to that goal.
But what exactly does Carbon Neutral mean? We’ve got the full low down for you coming up so keep reading…
Carbon Neutral, Net Zero, Carbon Negative, all these terms can be confusing, misconstrued, and most of all, used improperly. As these terms evolve over time and are growing to have legal and legitimate definitions, we wanted to make sure we are ahead of the times by making these statements responsibly and transparently.
What Carbon Neutral means is that we have done a detailed carbon tracking project to understand our current emissions for both our company and products, we have engaged in efforts to reduce emissions where possible, and lastly we have invested in carbon offsets to become Carbon Neutral.
So how did we get there? It all started in April when we saw the exciting completion of our Life Cycle Assessment with the expert knowledge and assistance from Orbis Advisory. This was a comprehensive 5 month project that tracked the carbon emissions of our highest selling product, our Mighty Ginger shot. In doing so we looked at every step in our supply chain from the moment our raw ingredients are harvested on farms, to the time our product is mixed and bottled in a factory, to the point is to enjoyed by you at home! This in-depth analysis popped out a result of 0.21Kg/Co2e (kilos of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions) per shot. Using this, were then able to estimate our TOTAL company emissions by extrapolating this number across all of our products.
Becoming Carbon Neutral is ultimately done by carbon offsetting. For this, we have partnered with Ecologi to help us purchase offsets that are rated at the highest standards, and work towards our desired sustainable development goals.
These projects are the Wind power in South Africa and the Solar power project in Vietnam.
We are under no illusion that offsets, in their current form, are perfect or replace the hard work of emissions reductions and/or removal from our wider business, inclusive of customers and suppliers.
We use offsets because we think it is an important precedent to set in our industry that businesses should be looking at their carbon footprint in more detail, and because many of the offset projects we invested in do a lot of social good in areas where our business operates.
We’re incredibly proud of this result, but in striving for a truly sensational planet we’re not going to stop at being Carbon Neutral. Net Zero is our end game, and becoming Carbon Neutral is only the beginning of a long process to achieving this goal…but more on that soon!!
